U.S. government issues new Form I-9 for use by all employers

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has revised the I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification Form (Form I-9) and issued a new form to be used to verify the employment eligibility of new hires, effective March 8, 2012. Employers have a 60-day grace period (or until May 7, 2012) to begin using the new form. Employers are not required to go back to re-verify their current employees using the new form, but any updates they perform of existing I-9s should be completed using the new form.

Although the new Form I-9 looks different from the earlier versions, the difference is largely due to formatting changes and the addition of three new data fields, including the new hire’s telephone number and email address. In substance, however, the new Form will not require employers to change their processes; other than, of course, using the new version.
