Chicago and Cook County minimum wage increased again on July 1st

On July 1, 2018, the minimum wage in Chicago increased to $12.00 an hour, and in Cook County to $11.00 an hour.

The Chicago ordinance applies to:

  • Employers who maintain a business facility within the city or who are required to obtain a business license to operate in the city; and
  • Employees who work two hours in the city within a period of two weeks, including domestic employees and home healthcare workers.

The ordinance does not apply to employees under 18 years of age, adult employees in their first 90 days of employment, certain disabled employees or employees working at a business with three or fewer employees.  

Many municipalities opted out of the Cook County ordinance. However, some communities, like Wilmette, opted out and reversed course to opt back in.
