Christina M. Mermigas

Principal

When business is personal, when providing for loved ones and protecting a life’s work are inextricably intertwined, Christina Mermigas’ compelling combination of sophisticated estate planning and transactional experience yields holistic approaches that achieve her clients’ goals and provide them with invaluable peace of mind.

Overview

Licensed in both Florida and Illinois, Christina represents individual and business clients in estate planning, business succession planning and the administration of estates and trusts, including Florida probate matters. As a seasoned corporate lawyer, she works with business owners on day-to-day matters and long-term strategic goals. Each aspect of her practice complements and informs the other, allowing her clients to reap the benefits that come from working with an attorney who understands that consequential decisions about life or business are not made in a vacuum.

Christina’s greatest priority is providing clients and their families with self-assurance and long-term security. She develops and implements comprehensive and thoughtful estate and asset protection plans, including trust funding, that achieve a client’s personal and business goals, such as probate avoidance, estate tax minimization and wealth preservation. Recognizing that life is never static and constantly changing, Christina stands side-by-side with her clients long after the ink has dried on an estate plan or consequential business transaction. Her actionable counsel, delivered with clarity and candor, is designed to address present needs and future contingencies in equal measure.

A meticulous drafter, active listener and advanced estate planning practitioner, Christina prepares individually fashioned estate planning documents, including revocable and irrevocable trusts, wills, powers of attorney and other advanced estate planning vehicles for clients with modest estates as well as high-net-worth clients with large, complex portfolios. Whether working with the founder of a start-up, young parents with a new family or a successful business owner looking to retire, Christina takes the necessary time to both learn and explain, empowering her clients with information and fully operational plans.

Christina drafts customized family legacy plans and wealth strategies, working seamlessly and collaboratively with a client’s other professional advisors to ensure that all efforts are aligned. She prepares irrevocable insurance trusts, spousal access trusts, gift trusts, charitable foundations, installment sales and other estate-freezing tools and techniques. Christina finds innovative ways to solve perplexing, often systemic issues and coordinates income, gift and tax strategies to reflect the client’s financial and familial values.

Sometimes working with multiple generations at one time, always with strategy, empathy, poise and grace, Christina’s dedication and attentiveness ensure that multi-step plans are executed through completion. One of the greatest joys of her practice is working with family businesses to develop a prudent business succession plan that will position their business for sustained prosperity for generations to come.

An accomplished transactional attorney, Christina develops strong, trusting relationships with the owners of established and newly formed companies to better understand their businesses and goals. She takes a detail-oriented, task-driven approach that helps her efficiently guide these clients through the transactional and tax issues they face every day, as well as the impact of big-picture economic changes. Christina has extensive experience representing clients in all phases of the business life cycle, including entity formation, restructuring and reorganization, the sale of stock or assets and the transition of ownership and management. She provides counsel on mergers and acquisitions, shareholder and buy-sell agreements and the development and maintenance of corporate governance.

Christina has been frequently recognized by the legal industry and her peers for her professional excellence and is actively involved in the firm’s operations and management, having served as chair of the Associate/Law Clerk Oversight Committee and as a proactive member of the firm’s Strategy Development Committee.

On the weekends and during free time, she’s devoted to her daughter, Raelynn, her supportive husband, David, and their two dogs. Favorite among her hobbies is playing goalie on women’s and co-ed ice hockey teams (Go Tigers!), which, along with an active family life, keeps her ready for action in any field of play!
