Leader of the firm’s 14-attorney Real Estate practice group, Kevin Coyne knows how much his clients invest — financially and personally — in their important real estate property transactions. That is why he is equally invested in their success, leveraging his extensive experience, strategic insights and commitment to responsive service to counsel clients in real estate acquisitions, dispositions and leasing transactions of all types and complexity.

Overview

With a pragmatic yet ambitious approach, Kevin relishes his roles as both legal counsel and business advisor, navigating the legal issues involved in commercial property transactions while also providing sound analysis of their investment potential and financial risks. Kevin complements his ability to find big-picture solutions with meticulous attention to the small details that can play a big role in the success of a transaction. This combination has earned him the trust and confidence of industry players throughout the Chicago area, from his colleagues in the real estate bar to lenders and brokers to land use and zoning officials. They know that he is an honest broker who can be trusted to get deals closed in a way that leaves all parties satisfied with the outcome and his clients positioned for long-term, positive returns.

Kevin has spearheaded or facilitated acquisitions, dispositions and developments across all asset classes, leaving his mark on the Chicagoland real estate landscape. He is particularly attuned to the issues and imperatives involved in commercial leasing matters, with substantial experience negotiating office, retail and industrial leases for both landlords and tenants, including national franchises, restaurants, bars and professional practices. Priding himself on the personal attention he brings to every transaction, Kevin crafts meticulous documentation tailored to align with the client’s present and future business needs and goals.

Having previously served on the Naperville City Council as well as the DuPage County Stormwater Commission, Kevin possesses a unique perspective and constructive insights on how to work productively with authorities to facilitate favorable outcomes on zoning, permitting and land use issues that can play determinative roles in the success of a real estate investment or project. His combination of government-side experience and substantial work on shopping center development is also manifested in his role as chair of the Government Relations Committee of the International Council of Shopping Centers.

Kevin stays abreast of changes and developments in real estate law by frequently attending legal education programs offered by bar associations and other real estate organizations, and he is an active member of the International Council of Shopping Centers. His commitment to continually expanding the scope of his knowledge to better serve his clients was also demonstrated by his mid-career decision to return to law school to earn an advanced law degree (LL.M.) in Real Estate law.

Consistently recognized by his peers for his professional accomplishments, Kevin has earned the distinction of being named a Leading Lawyer every year since 2017. In 2021, Kevin was chosen as one of Crain’s Chicago Business’ “Notable Gen X Leaders in Accounting, Consulting and Law,” and he also received their “Notable Gen X Leaders in Law” honor in 2019.

In addition to serving as leader of the firm’s Real Estate practice group, Kevin previously served on the Business Development & Marketing, Finance, Recruitment and Strategy Development Committees.
